The Billionaire’s Ex-Wife (Her Ex-Husband’s Regret) Chapter 30

Cassie

Beep Beep. Beep.

I can hear the beeping sounds of the heart rate monitor beside the, the rhythm matching the rise and fall of my chest as 1 slowly come to consciousness.

As I open my eyes, I blink against the bright fluorescent lights in the ceiling as my vision slowly adjusts to the pristine white: walls around me.

Then I see him-Kai, his face is etched with panic and worry, hi innocent eyes are shadowed with fear.

“Mommy!” he squeals as he sees me opening my eyes. “You scared me!”

1 force a smile on my face. “Didn’t you know that I am a toughie

“But still! When you fainted, I thought I’d lost you.”

“It’s just a punch! And Uncle Ethan doesn’t purich that strong,”

“Uncle Ethan?” Kai echoes.

“Yes? What’s the matter?”

“I thought… I thought he said that he’s my father,” he replies. I can hear a trace of sadness in his voice.

“Shit! When Ethan and I spoke about lying to Kayden about Kai’s paternity, we did not really think it through! And certainly, I never imagined that Kai would be in the same room when Etlun made that announcement!

“Are you sad?” I ask.

“Well, at first, I was shocked! I know that Uncle Ethan likes you. But when he said that he was my father, I thought about it, and I was happy. I thought maybe this time, I’m going to have my own Daddy. That we will have a complete family.”

Oh, crap! Now, we just gave Kai false hopes of having a complete family. What a horrible mother I am!

How do I explain this without lying to him?

I take his tiny hand in mine and give it a gentle squeeze.

“Sweetheart, listen to me,” I say to him. “Uncle Ethan and I will have a lot to work out on. When he said that you were his son… that… that was his intention. He doesn’t mean that he was your biological father.

“Aww..” he groans. “I thought… I now have someone to teach me how to play soccer.”

I laugh “T’ll teach you.”

“Come on, Mommy. You can’t even kick a ball properly.”

Tean, too!”

As we both laugh at my non-existent soccer skills, Lyn enters the room.

She smiles at me wearily. “You’re awake. Feeling better?”

I ruffle Kai’s hair and then I smile back at Lyn. “I’ll tell you later when you’ve given me a rundown.”

Kai takes it as a cue. He leaves the bedside to sit in the corner. Then he puts on his headphones and plays with his phone.

“Well, those two morons finally stopped fighting when you got knocked out on carried you to his car to rush you here. I

think Kayden would have fought him for the honor

if his shoulder didn’t start bleeding. The wound opened up, I think. So, both of you had to be rushed to the ER.”

“Is is he okay?” I ask nervously.

Lyn raises a suspicious brow at me. “Shouldn’t you ask first if you have a concussion?”

“I know I don’t, I reply defensively.

Lyn sighs. I think he had to go through another surgery again, albeit a minor one. Serves him right, if you ask me.” Lyn looks at me wearily. “Are you okay?”

“I just got knocked out. I’d probably sport a uise on my cheek, though.”

“That’s not what I meant,” Lyn said. “Kayden seems to be putting up a fight for you and…” she motions over at Kai.

I laugh humorlessly. “Four years ago, I would have done anything to see Kayden fight for me the way he fought for me today. But now.” Tears well up in my eyes as I stare back at Lyn I was okay, now, Lyn. My life is perfect! I don’t need him to do what he is doing four years too late.”

“Does he want you? Or Kai?”

“Well, he came to the hotel to find me. He wants me back. And then he met

“And now he wants you both,” Lyn groans. “Ethan will never allow that.”

“Did Kai hear the exchange between…

Lyn shakes her head. “I asked him to put on his headphones as soon as we

s we entered his room.”

“Thank you, Lyn,” I say, “Everything is just happening in a blur. I still can’t wrap my head around it.”

“Maybe you should go back to Manhattan after this.”

“But I need to work on King’s Legend. There’s still so much that I need to do.”

“Well, you accepted that challenge.””

“Now, I can’t remember why.”

The door opens and Ethan walks into the room. I stare back at him, keeping my face steady.

“Come on, Kai. Let’s get that ice cream you want to try.” Lyn leads Kai out of the room, leaving me alone with Ethan.

“Heyhe smiles sheepishly. “I am so sorry, sweetheart.”

“What are you sorry for, Ethan?” I raise a brow. “Is it for accidentally hitting me on the face? Or is it for calling Kai your se Original content from NôvelDrama.Org.

in front of him? Or is it for having a fake DNA test saying you are Kai’s father?”

Ethan approaches me, remorse is evident on his face. “All of the above,” he replies. Slowly, he reaches forward to gently touch my swollen cheek. “Especially for this one. I never, for the life of me, would hurt you. It would never even cross my

mind.”

I remove his hand from my cheek. “I know that. I’m not even angry at you for this.”

“I’m sorry that my emotions got the better of me. I was furious and worried when I saw Steele hugging Kai. It just blurted out of my mouth. I wasn’t even thinking”

“How come you have a DNA test ready? You know it’s a fake!”

“But Steele does not know that.” he reasons. “I had it made yesterday because I had… I had to act fast. I know Kayden will know about Kai and suspect something.”

“But it gave

Kai false hopes, Ethan!” I mutter. “It’s been his dream to have a father

“I know. And I’m sorry, I handled that tastelessly. I will speak to him. I will explain everything” He sighs, taking my hand in his “It wouldn’t matter someday anyway

“What do you mean?”

Ethan shrugs, and then he smiles at me sheepishly. “When we get married, I will be Kai’s father. I will adopt him. I will give him my name. I will treat him as my own. I will be an even better father than his biological father.” He pulls my hand and brings it to his lips. “Steele is nothing more than a man he shares DNA with. But I will be Kai’s father.”

The expression on Ethan’s face is hopeful, and I have no doubt that he will be a good father to Kai, and a better husband to

But the thing is. I’m not sure I’m ready for this yet. In fact, I’m not yet ready for a lot of things.

“Ethan.” I breathe.

“Sshh.” he puts a finger over my lips. “I know what you’re going to say. You don’t have to give me an answer now. Nothing has to change. I will wait for you, as long as it takes.”

I nod, thankful for his understanding. Ethan smiles and leans forward to kiss my forehead.

“Have a bit more rest. I’ll take care of Kai. Don’t worry about anything,” he promises

When Ethan left, I close my eyes to get more sleep.

I’m so sorry, Cassie.. I should have treated you better. I should have treated you right…”

You were the perfect wife. You treated me well. You tried your best to make me happy…”

All I’m asking for is a chance. A chance to make it up to you. A chance to make you happy…”

Just one chance, love. And I promise to make you the happiest woman in the world…”

“Kayden Kayden.”

I see Kayden’s sad face. I hear his pleading voice and I cannot help but feel my heart breaking.

“Why only now, Kayden?” I ask him. “You didn’t have to come back into my life! Everything is okay now. I don’t need you in my life anymoref”

“Just one last chance…”

That is not fair, Kayden! I’m happy now!”

My vision blurs and things begin to shift in front of me. Then I see Kayden’s handsome face in front of me, as I hear the screeching of tires.

He gives me a reassuring smile as he puts his arms around me protectively.

“Everything’s going to be okay, love. I’m here. I will protect you, he whispers against my ear. I open my eyes and realize that we’re in mid-air as the car falls off the cliff. But instead of fear, I feel comfort, protection and reassurance as Kayden’s body envelopes me, absorbing the pain and impact for me.

“I love you….” are his last words as the car hits the water and we both fall unconscious.

“Kayden!” I scream his name, as I bolt up from the bed, realizing that it was all just a dream.

‘Oh, thank God!’

I’m okay. I’m safe. And I realize that my injuries would have been worse if Kayden didn’t protect me.

“So?” a voice beside me interrupts my thoughts. “Are you done dreaming about my boyfriend?”

Iturn to the source of the voice and see Megan glaring at me.
