Chapter 21
Chapter 21
When the Laurier family decided to set up an arranged marriage with the Martinez family, Melanie had already investigated the Martinez family’s background. She had seen photos of every member and recognized Shannon immediately.
“Yes,” Shannon said sweetly with a well–behaved smile.
“Why are you here?” Melanie was accustomed to dealing with all kinds of people and immediately saw through shannon’s pretense. Her expression darkened.
Shannon lowered her head shyly.
“Lily just arrived at Lagersfield, so I’m here to keep her company for a while until she gets settled.”
Though Shannon tried her best to appear meek, Melanie was still annoyed by her.
“This isn’t appropriate, is it?” Melanie released Lily’s hand and sat up straight.
Her friendly demeanor was gone, replaced by the authoritative presence of an affluent woman.
“Shannon, you were the one who was supposed to marry Leid. But since your family sent Lily instead and they’re now engaged, it’s inappropriate for you to stay here. People who know the situation understand you’re her sister, but those who don’t might think Lily stole your fiancé.”
Melanie spoke with a sharp gaze.
Loid looked up at Melanie and smiled. His mother was impressive. He hadn’t said a word, and she was already defending Lily. He was curious about why his mother liked Lily so much on their first meeting.
“Mrs. Laurier, Lily was the one who asked me to stay,” Shannon said, tears welling up in her eyes. She looked very aggrieved.
Inside, however, she hated Lily even more. What was so special about this wretched girl that Melanie would defend her?
Shannon thought this situation only made her more determined to win Loid over. Since Melanie was willing to defend this country bumpkin, it meant that Melanie was a reasonable person and wouldn’t make things difficult for her.
If Shannon could marry into the Laurier family, she would be cherished.
Melanie glanced at Shannon, her expression cold.
“Your sister is just too kind to refuse you. She wasn’t raised in your family and just got engaged. She couldn’t possibly turn you down.”
Lily, who had been lounging on the side, glanced up. She was a little surprised. No one had ever spoken up for her other than her grandmother. Usually, people would just criticize her for being poorly raised whenever she caused trouble.Published by Nôv'elD/rama.Org.
But now, someone was defending her without even knowing the full story. She felt a bump in her throat. Taking a deep breath, she looked down
“L” Shannon didn’t expect Melanie to be so blunt and was at a loss for words. After a moment, she looked at Lily with tears in her eyes.
“Lily”
“Stop begging her. She’s too soft–hearted,” Melanie said. She glanced at Lily, who was casually playing with her phone on the couch
Melanie’s fondness for Lily grew. She liked Lily’s relaxed and unpretentious demeanor. The difference between Lily and Shannon was night and day. Lily outshone Shannon by miles.
Melanie said coldly, “Pack up your things and go home. Lily is engaged to Loid, and she’s my daughter–in–law. I’ll help her adapt to life here. You don’t need to worry.”
Shannon’s intentions were so obvious that Melanie wouldn’t allow her to stay and disrupt Loid and Lily’s relationship.
“Mrs. Laurier, 1.” Shannon bit her lip. She clutched her clothes rightly as tears welled up in her eyes.
She looked at Lily and pleaded, “Lily, Mom told me to take care of you. I won’t be able to give her a proper explanation if I go back now.”
Lily had been engrossed in her phone the entire time. When Shannon called her, she looked up and gave a mischievous smile. “Yeah. Why not let her stay?”
Melanie was about to protest when Lily added, “Since we need a maid here.”
